Agenda Item: VII.K.

Consider/Approve Budget Amendments for the Various Fund Budgets

Background Information:

Subsequent to the adoption of the General Purpose School Fund Budget for the 2010 – 2011 fiscal year, the following events occurred, which are accounted for through the General Purpose School Fund:

  • certain salary supplements budgeted for teachers for extracurricular activities were subsequently paid to paraprofessionals who were hired for the extracurricular activities;
  • less funds were expended in Regular Instruction staff development and more funds were expended in Alternative Instruction staff development;
  • an unusual amount of funds were paid in the form of sick pay due to serious illnesses to custodial staff;
  • the County Commission approved payment of three hundred and twenty-seven dollars ($327) per month for support staff insurance, which was an increase over the amount budgeted by the Board of Education;
  • excessive heat, particularly in August 2010, caused utilities to skyrocket beyond the five percent (5%) increase budgeted by the Board in its original budget document, as well as caused excessive repairs to HVAC units (compressors); and
  • the amount the Board pays for Internet service increased.

A resolution is attached for the Board’s consideration. The detailed line item amendment is an integral part of the resolution. This amendment must also be approved by the County Commission.

Additionally, certain line items within the General Purpose School Fund need to be amended to more closely reflect actual expenditures for the current fiscal year. This amendment is for Board approval only.

Within the School Federal Projects Fund, the following subfunds, which amendments have been approved by the State Department of Education, need Board approval reflecting the final budget for the current fiscal year:

Finally, the Central Cafeteria Fund needs to be amended to account for the bonus of $200 per employee approved by the Board of Education and County Commission, which is attached.

Staff Recommendation:

I recommend approval of the above noted budget amendments to the 2010 – 2011 fiscal year budgets of the various school funds.
